Opera:  Broadway’s Damn Yankees (1958)
It’s summer!  Time to revisit the joyous film adaptation of the Broadway musical about an elderly Washington Senators fan who makes a pact with the Devil to help his team win the pennant against those Damn Yankees.  Ray Walston is Mr. Applegate, the devil who transforms the old man into Tab Hunter, a batter who resists the charms of Lola, the devil’s assistant, played with great gusto by Gwen Verdon, with choreography by Bob Fosse. Trust Hollywood to give the Faustian legend a happy ending. (1958, closed captioned, 110 minutes.)
