Maria Callas in her heyday made studio recordings of Bizet’s Carmen, but never actually appeared in a live production of the opera.  In Forever CallasFranco Zeffirelli, who directed Callas in many of her triumphant stage appearances, imagines himself now convincing the aging and reclusive diva with a tempting offer to appear as her present self in a film adaptation of Carmen, not actually singing, but merely lip-syncing to one of her earlier recordings.  The film features Jeremy Irons as Zeffirelli, and Fanny Ardant as Callas. (2002, with closed captioning, 111 minutes.)
