We’ll discuss five short stories by Virginia Woolf.  Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the most highly regarded and influential English-language writers of the twentieth century.  Better known for her novels, such as To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf also wrote a number of short stories:  brief, delightfully witty and perceptive portrayals of human situations that exhibit Woolf’s unique style.  As our author for Women’s History Month, she is also an icon of the feminist movement, particularly for her books A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas. Our stories for discussion are “The New Dress,” “Moments of Being,” “The Man Who Loved His Kind,” “The Searchlight,” and “The Legacy.”  They’re included in a collection of Woolf’s short stories available in paperback and also online as pdf documents.  (Suggestion:  Google “Virginia Woolf short stories” and click on the Project Gutenberg Australia site.)
