Our reading will be an American classic, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, published 100 years ago this year. It’s likely that most of us read Gatsby in high school or college. If so, like me, you may not have read the novel in a long time and can look forward to a “fresh” read. Fitzgerald (1896-1940) became known as the writer who both depicted American life during the “Roaring Twenties” or the “Jazz Age” in his fiction and exemplified it in his seemingly glamorous life with his wife Zelda. The Great Gatsby, the third of his four novels, is considered his finest; some have even dubbed it the “Great American Novel.”
The Scribner’s paperback edition of Gatsby is inexpensive. It includes an Introduction by novelist Jesmyn Ward and a Foreword by the Fitzgeralds’ granddaughter, Eleanor Lanahan, the daughter of their only child, Frances (“Scotty”). Gatsby is also available as a pdf file.
Happy reading, and I’ll look forward to seeing you onscreen at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, July 9!
