Near Timbuktu, currently ruled by religious fundamentalists, Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his
wife Satima, his daughter Tanya, and Issan their shepherd. In town the people suffer, powerless, from the
terror imposed by foreign jihadists. Music, laughter, cigarettes and soccer have been banned. Women
have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd
sentences. Kidane’s family had been spared the chaos in Timbuktu, but when their destiny changes
abruptly, Kidane and his family must face the new laws of these foreign occupants.
Directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, this movie was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the
Academy Awards and Best Film at the BAFTA Awards. It won the Francois Chalais Award at the Cannes
Film Festival.
