We’ll read Millington Synge’s “Riders to the Sea.” Millington Synge (1871-1909) was a
major figure in the Irish Literary Renaissance, a new theatre based on Irish legend,
folklore, history, and language. Synge`s Riders to the Sea is set on the rocky, desolate
Aran Islands west of Mayo, where traditions run deep and life is an everyday struggle
for existence and where the protagonist Mauyra mourns the death of her husband and
six sons with a patience and dignity that have invited comparisons to Greek tragedy and
the Japanese Noh drama.
