Wartime Special #3: Andrzej Wajda’s Kanal

Apr 27, 2022 @ 1:30 PM Central Time
September, 1944. It’s the 56thday of Warsaw’s uprising against the Nazis, and a handful of resistance fighters led by Polish Lieutenant Zadra wade into the city’s underground sewers, hoping to escape the German encirclement, and their valor is tested one last time. The final moments of Wajda’s Kanal show why, to this day, the people of Poland remember not just the atrocities committed by the Germans during WWII, but also the duplicity of Stalin and the Russians. (1957, in Polish and German with English subtitles, 91 minutes.)
