Wartime Special #2: Nanni Loy’s The Four Days of Naples
Wednesday Apr 6, 2022 @ 1:30 PM Central Time
In 1943, after the Allies have invaded Sicily and are on the move northward, in nearby Naples, word arrives that the Italian army has surrendered, and the Germans immediately begin committing atrocities on the Italians. The Four Days of Naples is based on historical accounts of the bloody fighting between the Neapolitans and the German army throughout the streets of the town. Among the victorious combatants are a group of children from a juvenile detention facility. The film has never been released commercially on VHS or DVD, and my copy is taped from TV way back when. (1962, in Italian with English subtitles, 120 minutes.) April 6 happens to be the eighth anniversary of Grant Goodman’s death, so I am dedicating today’s program to his memory.
