Special Picks by Paul, Ray & Martha: Kieslowski’s First and Eighth Commandments

In 1989-1990, acclaimed Polish director Krzystof Kieslowski created a series of ten hour-long films for Polish television, each one a modern illustration of The Ten Commandments. Because it is not possible to show all ten in one afternoon, I asked Ray and Martha Souza to help me choose only two, and we settled on Kieslowski’s complex adaptations of the First & Eighth Commandments–“I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have no other gods before me” and “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” The films are wonderful examples of “situation ethics,” and I hope we have a good crowd to see and discuss the issues.
