Priests in Peril #2: Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess

The second in our series on “priests in peril,” I Confess begins with a murder, and we see a man dressed as a priest fleeing from the scene of the crime. The man enters a church, discards his clerical outfit, and confesses his crime in the confessional to a real priest (Montgomery Clift), who is bound by canonical law not to reveal what he knows, even when he is himself accused of being the murderer. Karl Malden is the policeman in charge of the investigation, and Anne Baxter is a woman who has long been in love with the priest. (1953, cc, 95 minutes.)
