Based on the novel by Denis Diderot, The Nun is about a young woman (Anna Karina) who is forced by her wealthy family to enter a restrictive convent. She scandalizes everyone when she refuses to take her vows, and is moved to another convent, one where she is subjected to even more cruel treatment. The film adaptation by Jacques Rivette was banned for over a year by the French Minister of information, and not released in America until 1971. (1965, in French with English subtitles, 140 minutes.)
