Wartime Special:  Is Paris Burning?
Monday Mar 21, 2022 @ 1:00 PM Central Time
What Putin is doing in March 2022 to the city of KYIV is reminiscent of what Hitler threatened to do to the city of Paris in August 1944, when the French Resistance within the city was planning an uprising against the Germans near the end of World War II.  The Nazi general in charge of Paris, Dietrich von Cholitz, was under orders from Hitler himself to bomb the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and burn the entire city if Cholitz cannot control it, or if the Allies get too close.
IS PARIS BURNING? is Rene Clement’s extraordinary film which chronicles what happened during those perilous days.  Among the actors in the film are Kirk Douglas, Glenn Ford, Anthony Perkins, Robert Stack, Orson Welles, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Boyer, Leslie Caron, George Chakiris, Alain Delon, Gert Frobe, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Yesterday Paris, Today KYIV. (1966, in French, German and English, with English subtitles, 3 hours.)  Email plim@ku.edu for the Zoom link.
