Before Roe v. Wade #1: Johnny Belinda
Sunday Mar 6, 2022 @ 1:30 PM Central Time
The first of four Sunday movies about women and unwanted pregnancies, Johnny Belinda is about a kind doctor in rural Nova Scotia who volunteers to tutor a young female deaf mute, and how he is falsely implicated when the girl is raped by an assailant she is afraid to name, gets pregnant, and is then ostracized by everyone when her only option is to have the baby. The movie was nominated for twelve Oscars, and won Best Actress for Jane Wyman, who does not speak a single word during the entire film. (1948, cc, 102 minutes.)
