For 191 years, the Supreme Court of the United States was populated only by men, which changed when President Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor as the first female justice in 1981, and she received unanimous Senate approval. The PBS documentary, Sandra Day O’Connor: The First, follows her career for more than two decades on the Supreme Court, where she was often the critical swing vote on cases involving many controversial issues, including race, gender and women’s reproductive rights.
