The second of five Hollywood films this month on China, Mervyn LeRoy’s Oil for the Lamps of China is based on Alice Tisdale Hobart’s novel about an American businessman (Pat O’Brien) who is slavishly devoted to the large American oil company he works for in China, even when it becomes obvious that the company is not looking out for him. Leave it to his long-suffering wife (Josephine Hutchinson) to threaten the company successfully and save the marriage. (1935, 97 minutes.)
