The first of five Hollywood films this month on China, Frank Capra‘s The Bitter Tea of General Yen is about an American missionary (Barbara Stanwyck) who, after arriving in Shanghai to marry another missionary, immediately encounters a Chinese warlord (Nils Asther) who finds her attractive, and she herself begins to have Freudian dreams about him. Will she or won’t she succumb to his attempts to seduce her? How will this interracial “romance” be resolved? (1932, cc, 88 minutes.)
