Foreign Film: Hester Street
Hester Street tells the story of many European Jews who settled on New York City’s Lower East Side in 1896, learning English and giving up the old ways. We share “Jake” Bogovnik’s dreams as he works as a seamster so he can bring his wife and son to America from Russia. When they finally arrive, he is disappointed that they are not as quick to assimilate to life in America as everyone else in the neighborhood. (1975, in English & Yiddish with subtitles 89 minutes.)
