Domestic Film:  Hemingway’s Adventures of a Young Man (1962)
Based on Hemingway’s autobiographical Nick Adams stories, the movie shows a young writer (Richard Beymer) leaving his rural Michigan home to go on the road, meeting a wonderful cast of misfits (including Paul Newman as a washed-up boxer), and ending up as a wounded ambulance driver in Italy during World War I.  In the film, Nick returns home after his alcoholic father’s suicide. We know, of course, that Hemingway will himself become an alcoholic and commit suicide on July 2, 1961.  (1962, closed-captioned, 145 minutes.)
