Val Stella, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry,
will speak on “Contemporary Art and History of the Haida People of Haida Gwaii, British
Columbia, and Alaska.” He will focus on this unique archipelago – often referred to as the Galapagos of
the North – and its people, art and culture. Gwaii Hannas, the southern half of Haida Gwaii, limits the
number of annual visitors to 3,000. Only 12 people at a time are allowed access to the ancient
abandoned villages. Val and his wife, Beth, have travelled to this area multiple times, and recently did so
with all 13 members of their immediate family. “It was a trip that will be forever etched in my memory,”
says Val. His presentation will include images from his personal collection of artwork
