Paul’s Pick:  Auntie Mame

Although I have been frequently accused of loving films which are mostly dour and depressing, I do have a list of guilty pleasures which I dip into during holidays here in America.  On top of the list is Auntie Mame, based on the autobiographical novel by Patrick Dennis, featuring the one and only Rosalind Russell as the irrepressible Mame, Jan Handzlik as the young Patrick to whom she opens up the world, Peggy Cass as Agnes Gooch, and many others who make me grin from ear to ear.  As a special New Year’s Eve treat, at the end of the film, I will read a short speech which I delivered upon receiving the Kemper Teaching Award at KU back in 2002.  (1958, cc, 2 hours 23 minutes.)
