The third of five Hollywood films this month on China, The Good Earth is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Pearl Buck, who is also one of only two American women to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. It tells the heartfelt story of farmer Wang (Paul Muni) and his wife O-Lan (Luise Rainer), how they work the land against all odds, managing not only to survive but also to prosper. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, for Best Cinematography and Best Actress. (1937, cc, 138 minutes.)
